Swimming

Swimming is one of the skills that I think everyone should develop. Unfortunately, I don’t know how to swim (until a couple of weeks ago). I’m not talking about being able to swim like a dolphin/shark. I just wanted to be able to sustain in the water without drowning. When I was a kid, I took some lessons. The first attempt, I was doing quite well until the fourth lesson, then I had to stop coz I was sick. Then I thought I knew how to swim unitl one day I went to the big pool and almost drown myself. The second and the third attempts were in Toronto – I don’t think the instructions were that clear and of course I didn’t push myself hard enough.

I know I don’t look like that, but I definitely suck at sports until I hit university. In my first year of university, I could finally run for like an hour non-stop @ 6mph. Those of you who do jogging/running know that it’s the first 15 min that’s the hardest. After that once the breathing’s ok, we can go forever. But jogging/running isn’t that good for the joint. What if I wanna do the cardio training when I get older… then I decided that I should really learn to swim.

Gotta thank my friends for the training and encouragement. I know I still swim quite badly, but at least I started. One friend said something like… swimming (or anything) is like giving birth, you just can’t stop half way. I like that idea. The other one quoted Prefontaine: “To give anything less than your best, is to sacrifice the gift”.

For those of you who would like to learn from a good instructor (one on one), you can let me know. NO commission for me, but I just think he’s good! And good things are to be shared.

And those of you who wanna swim, there are many pools out there.
Here’re the links: Look under recreational or leisure swim. All pools have a shallow end.
